   REFLECTIONS

THE INEXPRESSIBLE MYSTERY

The God of the universe is mysterious. Science has not been able to solve the mystery of how the universe came into being or explain exactly what continues to give it creative energy and masterful design. No religion asserts that it has found words to name fully the ineffable mystery of God, for no matter what name we use, God always transcends our limited ability to understand. God is a mystery to be believed, not known. And yet, we Christians believe that our name for God best expresses that inexpressible mystery: God is the Most Holy Trinity of three persons united in a communion of love, pouring forth that creative, saving, sanctifying love into the world. Today’s scriptures celebrate the mystery of the Trinity and give us clues for living that mystery in our lives.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

It is often heard that today’s observance is an “idea feast,” and that it is somewhat difficult to grasp its meaning. Other great solemnities, such as Christmas and Easter, have an easily grasped core. Yet, even though the Trinity is at the heart of our faith, firmly declared in the Creed since the Council of Nicea in 325, we are used to having people shrug and say, “Well, it’s a mystery.”
Perhaps it is more helpful to think of this as a “relationship feast,” since it unveils our deepest identity. Dorothy Day was a great social reformer, pacifist, and ardent lover of the Trinity. When people told her that she would certainly be canonized one day (the process is indeed underway), she protested dismissively by remarking that people were raising a fuss just because she was not afraid to talk about God. She loved the Trinity, and treasured the traditional icon for the feast, also known as “The Hospitality of Abraham,” depicting the three angelic beings seated at a table tilted toward the viewer and laden with bread and wine. For her, the Trinity revealed the heart of the Catholic life, three C’s if you will: community, communication, and communion. That was not an “idea” for her, but what it means to be created in the image of the Triune God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

TO OUR LADY
Holy Mary, bring help to the miserable,
strengthen those who are afraid, comfort those
who mourn, pray for the world at large, plead
the cause of the clergy, intercede for the devout.
May all who pay homage to your holy name
experience your powerful help.
—The (old) Breviary

A NOTE ON FINANCES FROM FR. BOB

Now that we have moved into the new church and pastoral center, you may see the amount of our offertory collections going up.   However, our expenses have also risen (our budget shows that we will need approximately $9,500 a week offertory income to meet expenses).  We also have the Education Center (lower level) to complete (hopefully within the next two years), and we have to service the loan we have with the Archdiocese which helped us build what we have now.  On a regular basis we will be reporting to you on the ongoing financial health of the parish,  We feel certain that we can meet all of our obligations because the Lord will continue to guide us and give success to the work of our hands.  We’ve come together this far, so let’s continue on our faith journey together and bring about a secure future.  Thank you for your past support, and may the Lord bless you in all that yet needs to be done.

Counting Team for:

May 19, 2008  Chris Kiley, Suzann Klein, Bill Neese and Hiram Wolgemuth
May 27, 2008  Lois Beasley, Mary Ellen Chavez, Dolores Lopez, Maryann Marini

MANY HANDS MAKE LIGHT WORK
Now that we have moved and are getting comfortable in our new church, we have some ministries that need volunteers.  We have an IMMEDIATE need for volunteers in our "kitchen/host" ministry (not our official name).  We need help providing food and/or setting up and cleaning up for funeral receptions and coffee and donuts.   If you feel you could serve on this committee, contact Dottie Maierhofer at 303-604-2430 or e-mail her at dmaierhofer@yahoo.com.

        RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS

PARENTS of 3 – 8 year-olds
We continue to have KID’S WORD at the 10:00 a.m. Mass on Sundays, because several ladies responded to our plea for new volunteers earlier in the school year.  However, we NEED MORE VOLUNTEERS to accommodate the numbers of children who are benefiting from this program.  Each adult’s commitment is no more than 1 Sunday per month. All adults must complete one session of Safe Environment Training before working with the children. Please call Judy at the parish office or talk with a current Kid’s Word leader for more information.

JustFaith
There are 168 hours in each week. Did you know that you can participate in a rich spiritual journey at our parish for a commitment of less than three percent of that time?  Can you spend three percent of your week deepening your faith and encountering the Gospel in a new way?   JustFaith offers an intensive study of the Christian’s call to address the needs of the world. The thirty-week program includes weekly meetings, regular reading, 2 retreats and 4 immersion experiences. The program will run from September to May. For more information, stop by the JustFaith table after Church today or call Rita Albright 303-665-3800.

Neighbor to Neighbor
The Sister Carmen Center is in need of cereals, soups, crackers, fruit juices, and toiletry items. On your next shopping trip, please think about buying one or two items, and leave them in one of the bins by the entrance to the church when you come to Mass. We take the donations to the Sister Carmen Center every Monday morning.
