IntroductionMISSION STATEMENT
"Immaculate Conception is a faith community rooted in Jesus Christ and guided by the traditions, teachings, and practices of the Roman Catholic Church. Since 1907 we have been and continue to be an open, welcoming and vibrant gospel presence in Lafayette, continually strengthening the faith of the community and families through worship, education, and prayer. We seek to be faithful stewards of God's love to others through ministries that serve our community and impact upon human concerns locally and globally. We have been blessed with a rich diversity of people. Thus we will continue to work toward the unity of all segments of our parish so that the unique social and spiritual gifts of each segment can be both recognized and given for the good of the whole community. And in all this we continue to be pilgrims on our journey of life together, carrying out the work of Jesus Christ to which we have been called." A
SHORT HISTORY
Immaculate Conception parish extends a
warm
welcome to all visitors and guests who chose to celebrate with us. We
invite all intended members to register in the parish. Registration
forms
are available in the church entrance or the Parish Office.
In the late
1800's the Catholic bishop of Colorado, Joseph Machebeuf,
gave the responsibility for the churches in Boulder County to the
Benedictine priests of St. Vincent Archabbey in Latrobe,
Pennsylvania. For several years, Catholics in Lafayette
attended St. Louis Church in Louisville. But in 1904 an effort
was begun to establish a parish in Lafayette, and for the next two
years, funds were collected for this purpose. In 1907, the parish
of St. Ida was canonically established, a small church was built, and
on August 4, 1907, Fr. Virgil Nesslein, O.S.B. was appointed the
first pastor. Despite economic disasters, miners'
strikes, a major flu epidemic and the Ku Klux Klan, the parish
continued to grow.
By the early 1950's, it was obvious that the small church was no longer adequate and so a new church was built two blocks to the north. In July 1954, the new church was dedicated, and because it was the Marian year honoring the 100th anniversary of the declaration of the Immaculate Conception, (and also because hardly anyone knew who St. Ida was) the name of the parish was canonically changed to Immaculate Conception. In June of 1968, the Benedictines asked the Archdiocese of Denver to take over the parish for the assignment of priests, and since then the priests serving in Lafayette have been diocesan priests Now we are in the 21st century, and it is time to build a new church and pastoral center so that we can carry on the work handed down to us by our faith-filled ancestors.
